Description
In this Workshop you will create a working OnPrem NAV or Business Central environment for testing purposes. You will learn all the steps necessary to repeat the process for a production environment.
The workshop uses NAV2018 as an example, but you can use any supported OnPrem version of NAV of Business Central.
You will receive documentation for all presented content, including sample code. All sessions will be recorded and distributed to the attendees.
Learning Objective
Learn how to lift an OnPrem NAV or Business Central environment to Azure, using Azure SQL as database platform
Target Audience
This course is suited for administrators of NAV or Business Central databases, and technically inclined consultants or developers.
Program
Session 1 – Set up a CRONUS environment in Azure
As a first step you will set up a complete environment in Azure, using the CRONUS database. This allows you to prepare every step needed in advance, so that when the actual customer database is moved you can start from a running environment.
Session 2 – Set up Monitoring
One of the key features that you can use on Azure is monitoring of your environment. You can check and manage performance, log long running queries, or use it for debugging purposes. This session focuses on the set up of monitoring; the usage of these tools is subject of a separate workshop.
Session 3 – Deploy a NAV2018 database to AzureSQL
Running a database on AzureSQL brings some restrictions. To be able to deploy a database you will need to prepare your OnPrem database first. In this session you will learn how to solve the most frequent issues.
Session 4 – Finalize the setup, and Next Steps
As a last step, your new AzureSQL database needs to be accessible for testers. You will connect the running Azure installation to the new database, update the monitoring settings, and you will learn how to connect on prem client software to use the Azure environment. Also, you will learn about some related subjects that need to be taken care of when you want to set up a production environment on Azure.
Prerequisites;
– An Azure Subscription
– Co-)admin permissions for the Azure subscription
– The (NAV 2018) Customer License. This license must have the ‘Per Database’ granule activated
– A SQL backup (.bak) file of the Customer database that you want to move to Azure. You could use a CRONUS database as an example.
– A machine where you can install a Developer version of NAV 2018 (including SQL Server) and SQL Server Management Studio. This machine should have a stable internet connection, and sufficient disk space to host the Customer’s SQL database.
– NAV 2018 installation media for the correct localization
– A recent version of SQL Server Management Studio. The current version when writing this document is 18.6
