How to upgrade from Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 to Dynamics 365
AX
Dynamics 365
In my previous article Upgrade from CRM Online to Dynamics 365, I wrote about the transition path from CRM Online to Dynamics 365 (Cloud). Over the past few months, a lot of changes have been made to the CSP pricelist. Dynamics 365 Plan 1 became Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Plan and Dynamics 365 Plan 2 became Dynamics 365 Plan. Microsoft also introduced a third plan offer named Dynamics 365 Unified Operations Plan. Slightly confusing but stay with me. In this blogpost, I will look at this new offer and discuss the upgrade path from AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 Unified operations plan.
New licensing model
We recently learned from Microsoft of their decision to split up Finance and Operations EE (AX) in to three modules: Finance & Operations, Retail and Talent. In contrast to Retail and Talent, Finance & Operations (previous named: Operations) can no longer be sold as a standalone solution and is licensed exclusively with the Dynamics 365 Unified Operation Plan or Dynamics 365 Plan SL. There is a minimum quantity of 20 Unified Operations Plan and/or Plan User SLs required. CSP does not allow you to combine the Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations SKUs with Dynamics 365 for Retail or Talent to meet this minimum requirement of 20 SLs.
Special transition offers
What does this mean for current AX customers who want to move to D365? Well they can make use of specified transition offers to move over to Dynamics 365. These transition offers can be divided into; From SA and Cloud Add-on product SKUs. From SA SKUs are only available at renewal for customers with fully paid perpetual licenses. Cloud Add-on SKUs provide the opportunity to add Dynamics 365 while maintaining the ‘old’ Software Assurance benefits. The Cloud Add-on SKUs are available at any time.
Upgrade process via Dynamics LCS
This is useful information, so how do I start the process I hear you ask? Well, the first step is to assign the order licenses via the Office 365 admin portal. The upgrade process can be started via Dynamics Life Cycle Services (LCS). Partners can sign up for the AX2012 to Dynamics 365 for Operations Upgrade Preview Program to accelerate the upgrade process.
